So, I dig platform pedals now?

*Originally partiality written way back in October of 2022

Who would have guessed? Not me.
I dig riding on platform pedals. Well I do now at least.
Its an odd thing I tell ya.
It struck me on my pedal commute to work the other day. In the last 2 years I have logged more miles on platform pedals than I have since before I converted to "clip-less" pedals way back in the late 90s.
For real.

My first pair of clip-less pedals were Shimano M-737 (which is also one of Shimano's first clip-less pedal for the mountain bike crowd). I still have them in the parts bin.
I bought them on a "road trip" to Lawrence, KS to ride the LTR with a college buddy (still a buddy). I bought pedals at a bike shop who's name escapes me. But part of the idea at the time was the pedals were to go with my buddy's dope Adidas shoes that I was also gonna buy.
Those shoes were some of the coolest looking shoes I'd ever seen and I wanted them.
Unfortunately they were a couple sizes too small. Didn't stop me from doing my first couple of rides on my new pedals though.
But in the end it was just silly and I ordered a pair of Nike PooBahs (remember those?)
Those were great. I ended up burning through a couple pairs. Had a pair of Van's SPD compatible shoes as well.
Ah yeah the good old days.... haha!

Riding in clipless shoes for commuting seemed silly.
Epically once I was not living 10 - 15 miles from work.
When I started working for Midwest Cyclery in midtown KC and lived 5ish miles away it seemed kinda pointless
5 miles on the fixed gear with flat pedals and toe cages or some kind of pedal strap was the ticket.
I also stopped wearing chamois shorts as well
Then I moved to Des Moines, Iowa and my commute was under 4 miles, all 3 places I lived.
When I moved back to KC to help open the Velo Garage and Tap House in North Kansas City my flat pedal ways stuck although the commute got longer.
These days my love for Bedrock Sandals  keeps me on flats all Spring, Summer, and into winter.
Granted I gave up flat pedals for #fixedgear riding. I always clip in for that. Or the occasional bike race or longer ride.

Summer is ending and again the question is... what will I wear once the Bedrock Sandals get put away?
Well kind of like last fall/winter I figure it out. I've got my very reliable 45 North boots that are SPD compatible

*10/01/2025 addition
Since my primary winter shoes are SPD cycling shoes I clip in all winter.
I did pick up a pair of 45 North winter shoes that are a little more casual looking and have yet to install SPD cleats just rock the flats with them. On my first ride with them it felt odd. Having a shoe that felt stiff, which gave the illusion that I was clipped in. So much so that my first fat bike commute in them was tricky cause I kept pulling my foot off the pedals thinking that I was attached. Nope.
We'll get there. Its the Fall of 2025 (JFC I started this post 3 years ago!) and my plan is to continue how I have for the last several fall/winters. Haven't had too much of an issue yet and since I don't have a choice but to ride (well I guess I can always walk or get the bus) I'll just keep on keeping on.
Fingers crossed it goes just as well as it has.
I'm sure worst case I'll tell ya about it. Ideally just not 3 years later.

Experiments

Test ride of a potential new phone mount. Clamped the phone in and turned it on just outside of the west bottoms. Filmed the regular stretch of Southwest BLVD, up “that climb”, to Hi-Dive Lounge for a #OneAndDone

New Year New Job?

Welp the plan was to make some changes for me in 2025. If nothing else for my mental health.

That idea got suddenly pushed into action Friday 01/31 when I was unceremoniously fired from a job that I moved back to KC to do 7+ years ago.

Remembering the words a friend the last time I got fired from a long time bicycle shop job went and got a friend with a truck and cleared all my personal tools, parts etc, more or less, out so there is zero reason to go back.

Change was needed. I’d been saying since that businesses 2nd year of operation that if I didn’t work there I wouldn’t have gone there. The concept is good, something about the owner/operator isn’t. No hard feelings & I wish them the best of luck.

Added bonus; no longer do I need to cross the HOA bridge twice a day 5 days a week. So my car free bicycle commuter life style is already better.

Job prospects already in the works.

Funny How Things Turn Out

Kind of a recently new yet weird predicament for me.

While yeah, I’ve bought a couple cheap vehicles in the past. I’ve paid for insurance, bought gas, etc

But having an auto shop owner father meant that since before I could legally drive, I’ve had access to numerous vehicles with more or less free maintenance on those vehicles.

Basically the last 30 years.

Yet somehow I became the bicycle guy who (as of recently) doesn’t even own a vehicle, have easy access to one, or money get one.

Hahaha…

Probably seems weirder to me that it actually really is.

KC Pride? Kinda.

Dawned on me this morning that the last time I got hit by a car and was hospitalized, 20 odd years ago, that some friends happily thought that I came out of it as a Chief’s football fan. Never mind that they probably influenced me by watching it on tv in my room while I was in a coma. (FYI Coma dreams are weird & not recommended)

While I am a KC fan being born, raised, & living almost my entire life so far in this town I’m still not really much if any of a football fan. Sure, just like any ball sports I’ll watch it if it’s on the bar TV but I’m not going out of my way to find it. So while my KC pride means I hope our team does well today overall I don’t care enough about the sport to watch it.

I do hope they win tho. For no other reason than KC pride and not wanting to listen or read about y’all bitching about a loss.

Make it a great day!

October Surprise

It’s nice that over these 3 months since (what I’ve been calling) the October Surprise that there has been so many people supporting and wishing me well in my recovery.

Unfortunately I have a pretty low opinion of myself so it struck me as odd that anyone actually even cared.

However, I have been pushing myself possibly harder than I should have been to recover. Not because of or for those supporters but because recovery was what I wanted. While I may not think I really have much of a life, it’s MINE LIFE and I want it back.

And we are getting there.

These 3 months have been trying, physically & surprisingly mentally but recovery is happening.

I’m set to be back in the shop wrenching on & selling bikes again at the first of February. Heck at this rate #biketoworkKC will be back shortly too.

Thanks again for all the support. Especially those that donated to the Go Fund Me that was set up. Thanks to that I’ve been able to pay rent, bills, & eat.

A big thank you to the fine folks at Truman Medical Center as well for patching me up. Cause I was a bit of a mess.

Fractured skull, broke collarbone, 5 broken ribs, fractured wrist, oh boy!

All from a possible hit and run.

Via my last doc visit it will be a year before my body is done healing.

So let’s make 2023 a good one, shall we?

Bike Freak - 1977

The following was found in The League of American Wheelmen Bulletin
Volume 13 Number 3 from March 1977

                                                     Bike Freak
                                                   Jim Luparello

Do you qualify to be called a Bike Freak or are you a Tourist?
Listed below are some questions you can answer (and be honest) to find out exactly where you fit in the bike world.

1: Are you someone that owns expensive bicycle shoes, while wearing regular shoes from the discount store?

2: Do you wear Lambertini or equivalent bicycle jerseys, while wearing holey tee-shirts?

3: Do you own a Masi or equivalent, while driving an economy car?

4: Do you have Clement Seta's (silk) tires on your bike while you have recaps or 4-ply nylon tires on your car?

5: Will you drive 100 miles to go on a bike ride, but won't drive 2 miles to the grocery store?

6: Are you someone that promises your spouse or girl friend/boy friend a one-week vacation in
Denver, but neglect to say there is a bicycle rally there?

7: Do you pay top dollar for Campagnolo equipment on your bike, but look for bargain on anything else?

8: Does you bicycle glitter and sparkle, yet you can't see out of your car window?

9: Do you set aside Sundays only for club rides?

10: Are you someone whose girl friend or wife tells you "you're only interested in two things in life"?
            A. Bicycles
            B. Sex
               (Not necessarily in that order)

11: Do you ride in cold, rain, and snow, just to earn a patch, but won't go shopping because it's too cold outside?

12: In a bicycle accident, would you rather skin yourself up rather than scratch your bicycle?

 Yes answers:
 0-2 = Weekend Tourist
 3-5 = Club Rider
 6-9 = Racer
 10-12 = Bike Freak

Thursday feels...

More than anything in this world
I just want you to be my woman
More than anything in this world I want to be your man

 I'd walk through fire
Stand in the rain
I'll go to hell and back
On a plane
I'd scale the mountains
Swim the seas
I beg for mercy
Down on my knees

More than anything in this world
I just want you to be my woman
More than anything in this world
I want to be your man

 I caused you sorrow
I've caused you pain
But love is all we will have to gain
I searched to whole world, oh I
And I want you to be my baby

More than anything in this world
I just want you to be my woman
More than anything in this world
I want to be your man

Fat Bike Blues

From the Draft file via January 2017:

Texts I sent to my lady (editors note: now ex) during & post a recent ride on my new to me fat bike. Clearly there were some issues

*Feeling like the biggest chump in the world for falling for the idea that getting a fat bike would be fun. This fucking sucks and I'm probably gonna have to walk this piece of shit home. Damnit.

*Stupid loud rear brake and a rear tire that won't hold air. Fuck me.

*FYI don't worry. A few minutes being upset, then a few minutes feeling foolish for being upset, followed by shaking my head & getting to work fixing the problem.
Decided just to ride home after just in case the fix didn't fix it. Used all my c02 & with a fat tire my little hand pump doesn't seem to do much.
Kind of a downer but overall it's just part of the deal when it comes to riding bikes.
Got home had a smoke, opened a beer, orders Jimmy Johns. 👍😻😻😻

CheesyTuesday feels....

All that time I was searching, nowhere to run to, it started me thinking,
Wondering what I could make of my life, who'd be waiting,
Asking all kinds of questions, to myself, but never finding the answers,
Crying at the top of my lungs, with no one listening,

All this time, I still remember everything you said
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget.

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can't take this,
You know I love you, but I'm playing for keeps,
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this,
You know I want to, but I'm in too deep.

So listen, listen to me, You must believe me,
I can feel your eyes go through me,
But I don't know why.

I know you're going, but I can't believe it's the way that you're leaving,
It's like we never knew each other at all, it may be my fault,
I gave you too many reasons, being alone, when I didn't want to
I thought you'd always be there, I almost believed you,

All this time, I still remember everything you said,
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget.

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can't take this,
You know I love you, but I'm playing for keeps,
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this,
You know I want to, but I'm in too deep.

So listen, listen to me,
I can feel your eyes go through me

It seems I've spent too long
Only thinking about myself
Now I want to spend my life
Just caring bout somebody else.

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can't take this,
You know I love you, but I'm playing for keeps,
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this,
You know I want to, but I'm in too deep.

Saturday feels...

"Better Man"

Waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speechs
As he opens the door, she rolls over...
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over

She lies and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...
Can't find a better man
Can't find a better man
Ohh...

Talkin' to herself, there's no one else who needs to know...
She tells herself, oh...
Memories back when she was bold and strong
And waiting for the world to come along...
Swears she knew it, now she swears he's gone

She lies and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...
She lies and says she still loves him, can't find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, can't find a better man...
 Can't find a better man
Can't find a better man
Yeah...

She loved him, yeah... she don't want to leave this way
She feeds him, yeah... that's why she'll be back again

 Can't find a better man
Can't find a better man
Can't find a better man
Can't find a better... man...

Feeling sappy for the Holidaze...

 Old Lang Syne
-Dan Fogelberg

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stood behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried

We took her groceries to the check out stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation lagged

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

She said she's married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie
I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was Hell

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving, in our eloquence
Another "Auld Lang Syne"

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And, as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain

Human Herd

We set our minds to take him away from your arms
Our greatest fear is never to bring him to harm
Its hard to see his flowing golden hair
For light thats blinding us with market share

Chorus:
You can't protect him from his life
We'll find a way to make you lie
He'll be with us and never die
This the end and you know why

Out to the water you let us pull him down
They never struggle when they to want to drown
They take so much from us without a word
Just a little thing we ask from the Human Herd

Chorus:
You can't protect him from his life
We'll find a way to make you lie
He'll be with us and never die
This the end and you know why

You can't protect him from his life
We'll find a way to make you lie
He'll be with us and never die
This is the end and you know why

HFBD to Me

HFBD-4

Yeah Yeah... Another loop around the sun accomplished.
Nope. Not dead yet and have every intention to keep it that way for as long as possible.
Yay me.

HFBD-3

As you read this (the beauty of pre writing and scheduling posts) I am in route to KC for the weekend to visit family and friends.
I'm also heading down to help host the rolling shit show that is known as:

Pub N Pedal

Pub N Pedal 10

Pub N Pedal 10....
How in the hell have we (And by "we" I mean Jones) been able to pull this shit show off for 10 years?
Have you been before? Well then you know the drill... You haven't?
Well shit son, get on your facespace page and got to events and look that shit up.
Or better yet, click HERE
Granted I suspect you'll still have to have FaceSpace to see it. But I'm sure you do.
Everyone does these days don't they?
Blah....

Anyway. Come ride bikes around KC, pretend to be racing, take photos, drink beers (or don't, no one says you have to), and have good times.
See ya there

Speaking of new music...

Have you ever head of We Hunt Buffalo?
They aren't new, just new to me and its pretty much the sound I've been into.
Give them a listen.

Their videos may not be as clever as Red Fang's (but really, who's are?) but I'm digg'n on their sound.
