The race didn't get of to a grand start. By the time I was suited up and on the bike everyone was on the start line. No warm up. Ready, Set, Go!
First lap was a bit sketchy...lots of gravel in some of the turns and I hadn't ridden the course yet so I was learning. First lap hurt a bit. I should have know that I didn't eat enough before the race when steping out of the car on arrival I was already hungry....bad sign. I fell back lots of spots from the get go...I didn't exactly start in the front either.
Lap two: I was felling "better". At least I knew the course now. Moved up a few spots from last. One of the women that started 30 seconds behind us blew past me on a single speed. That kicks ass and I told her so by yelling "Hell yeah! Single Speed!! GO! GO! GO!" Attractive and riding a beautiful SS...good stuff.
Lap three: No problems with the sand pit. I practiced the steping high while running eariler in the week. Paid off in the deep sand. The barriers were not horrible but could be better. I have practiced lots of dismounts and remounts but I haven't practiced with actual barriers. I need to. My timing was way off for the first barrier in each set, which throws you off for the next two.
Lap four final lap: Except for the lack of proper pre-race eating I actually felt pretty good. I had sucessfully held off the attacks from behind and didn't lose any more places.
Over all not a great race but not bad for my first cross race in more than a year and the third ride on the new bike. 17th out of a field of 28. I accomplished two of my goals for the race: I didn't get laped and I finished the race. Now if I can keep that up for the rest of the season it won't be half bad.
Next race is in two weeks...I better get in some practice on the items that need work. Getting in some miles will help too I am sure.
Hung out for a while and watched the 3/4 race and half of the 1/2/3 race before Brian and I decided that taking care of our gorwing hunger was more important than cheering any one else on.
I have more photos of the other races on in the normal spot.
