"Project Chopper" Stolen on day one

As you may have heard I have been kicking around a chopper idea for a while to use the parts that came on the Giant Stiletto that was left from the “zeke fund”. The Stiletto would be cool but it is too small to be useable to even ride to the bar a few blocks away. I had attempted to sell it with no results. So I decide to use the parts on a frame that I could actually ride as a bar/neighborhood cruiser.

As some of you know I began hunting for a frame and the fine fellas a Surly offered a deal that I couldn’t refuse on a brown Karate Monkey.

Friday I got the plan figured out for sure and built the bike up.

Surly Karate Monkey frame – large brown

Stiletto extra long double crown chrome chopper fork

20” front wheel with a 3.0 chopper slick

DX 170 cranks (Lifted from Travis Coates)

Salsa 32t chain ring (Lifted from TC)

26” rear wheel – XT hub with Surly fixer and Ritchie rim

Maxxis Holy Roller 2.4 rear tire

Wellgo BMX pedals

17t Surly track cog and lock ring

Stiletto stem

24” ape hangers with custom “Big Grin” carpets

Kalloy post

WTB saddle

I rode it around the store a bit and then headed home. I cooked dinner and then road around the neighbor hood for about 30 minutes. I hit 75th Street Brewery for a beer and to chat up some friends and show off the new ride. A couple of hours and many a beer later the friends wanted to move up to Finn’s Waldo Bar. I hesitated and almost didn’t go in since I didn’t have my bike lock… an instinct I should have gone with. I parked right out side the back door in the alley. The door man who checking I.D.’s commented on the crazy bike. I thanked him as asked him to keep an eye on it to which he agreed. I walked to the bar ordered a whisky, took one drink and was talking to friends.

Suddenly the door man is there… “Dude I just opened the back door and your bike is gone.” What!?! Sure enough… it was gone. I walked around a couple of blocks thinking that there was no way it could have gotten far. It’s not an easy bike to ride especially if you are not over 6’ tall, plus it a fixed gear with no brakes and flat pedals.

I went back into the bar, finished my whiskey and then went out again and walked a couple of more block loops the opposite direction. No dice. So I headed home a little sloshed and a lot pissed.

No one to blame but me… I shouldn’t’ have left there unlocked.

I had plenty to drink before the second bar and could have just gone out riding for a bit and gone home. But no, I want to hang out some more and paid the price of sorts.

Oh well bad stuff happens some times.
