Boss Cross #1... and what not
Boss Cross #1 was Saturday. The race was the preview of the course for Cross Nationals in December so I wanted to go.
But I might as well saved my entry fee $$ for as crappy as I felt and rode.
The day after Halloween was a rough morning for me after spending the evening riding around town in costume and then dancing and drinking to the sounds of The Zeros at the Brooksider
I hadn't been on the bike much all week but Halloween night I rode 35+ miles on the fixie and I was feeling it in my legs Saturday morning.
But as rough as I felt I still got up made breakfast and picked up Mr Joshua to head north to the venue.
We were a bit behind schedule and got there in just enough time to register and change before I race.
Looking at the course we both knew it was gonna be a rough one for a Single Speeder... lots of climbing.
The course felt like it was all up hill... both ways.
Right from the gun I knew I was wasting my time.
The start sprint left me in the dust and I in essence gave up right then.
We hit the grass and the first climb and I watched guys that I have beaten at races this year ride away from me.
I had no legs and no interest in killing myself to give chase, so I didn't.
I wasn't DFL but was too damn close to it.
Heck even the guy with flat pedals and tennis shoes beat me and he crashed several times.
The course was tough, even if I would have been having a good day it would have shattered me. But with no inspiration to put any power down I took it easy and soft pedaled in a way hoping to get lapped and pulled so I could have a better excuse to quit. But I wasn't and rode the entire race.
Here is a clip of the course. Not sure what race it is but its a helmet cam clip. I know that Cyclocross Magazine stuck a helmet cam to one of the Monkey Wrench (thanks for the cap Nate!)guys helmets but this isn't the clip

The 1/2/3 race was dominated by Steve Tilford. He lapped a majority of the 30 racer field before the end of the race. Personality wise I don't particularly care for the guy but he has been around and doing this thing for a long time. And at 47+-something he is still amazingly fast and fun to watch race.
Thanks to Jeremy, Boss Cross founder and rocker, and the fine people up at Cycle City for putting on the event. Oh and thanks to Jeremy for making me feel so loved, although I was sucking ass, with his heckling of me over the PA while he was announcing during the race.
Sundays Sunflower Cyclocross race at Clinton Lake Sate Park in Lawrence, Kansas was canceled at the last minute sighting difficultly with the park department.
The email that went out said:
"Late this week I was informed the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has put a hold on all special events at Clinton Lake State Park for the rest of the year, and likely into 2009. This affects the cyclo-cross race planned for Sunday. All Special Events (even those held on paved areas but excepting events on the trails) have been put on hold "to allow the park grounds to sufficiently recover from the Wakarusa Festival".
Funny how that decision has been made now although the Wakarusa Music Festival was back in the spring and we have already had a race at the park this year. Nothing against the race promoter but the side story I heard at the Boss Cross wasn't that the parks department was being a problem but that he, per the normal, waited until the last minute to get the park departments approval to even have the race.
Ah well stuff happens I guess. No one said putting on races was easy.
Made up the lack of cross action Sunday with some mountain bike action at Landhal Park. Mr Joshua and I loaded up the SSMTBs, picked up Caton and hit the trails for 3+ hours of single speeds on single track goodness.
It was a great day to be on the trail, conditions were perfect and we had tons of fun. I haven't been on my 29er much this year so it was a nice change of pace and a damn good time after spending so much time lately on a drop bar bike.
Up next on the cross schedule is Veterans Cross in Leavenworth, Kansas on the 9Th which I will be missing due to inventory for the store happening that weekend.
After that the schedule takes us to Leavenworth again on the 16Th for the Kansas Cyclocross Championships which I am on the fence about going to.
"Teammate" Mr Joshua will be out of town on beer business so maybe if I can find a ride out I will go race.

Do to the current and projected weather conditions at Crowder State Park, the Crank-N-Cruise Mountain Bike Race that was scheduled for Sunday, April 13th has been POSTPONED…More details forthcoming. I'm sure you were probably expecting this message. I know you are frustrated, as are we.
The winter from "Hades" has continued to rear its ugly head into the spring racing season. Crowder State Park has received over an inch of rain on Tuesday, a quarter of an inch last night, and it has rained all day today. The extended forecast is calling for possible rain and below average temperatures. There is even a chance for snow flurries Friday night. The Thompson River is currently rising and Grundy County is under a flood alert. With all these contributing factors
We have already stated our reasoning for not supporting "Rain or Shine" races in past posts. I've stated my personal view points on "Pappy's Place" but I'll give you the short version anyway:
We choose to look at the "Big Picture" and the impact our decisions will make in the long run, not for immediate gratification. Racing in the mud is not fun and is detrimental to the ecology of the trail systems we utilize for our race venues.
We are not willing to compromise our trails or cobble together an alternative "short option" that would simply satisfy the requirements of "calling it a race." We have some of the best trails in north Missouri. That is why we host a race. We want to showcase our wonderful trails. We would rather wait until the conditions improve and we can offer a better racing experience. We, Heartland Sport Promotions [HSP], have very high standards and expectations for our events. We strive for the best and that is what racers have come to expect when they participate in our events.
The decision to cancel or reschedule a race is not totally ours to make. We are utilizing public lands and have a land manager that has jurisdiction in making the final decision as to whether an event will proceed or be cancelled. At Crowder State Park that decision is based on environmental impact, public safety, and following the established policies concerning inclement weather and trail closures.
Please continue to monitor the Heartland web page for updated information on the 2008 race schedule. We are looking at possible options for rescheduling events.
I hope you will continue to support our efforts to provide the racing community with quality events. We love to ride bikes and share trails just like you do!

Mother Nature has her own ideas....
Currently at 4am, we already have between 1/4" to 1/2" of rain and it's still falling.
As we mentioned yesterday, the trails just can't handle this amount rain, therefore....
Spoke Pony Showdown 3hr/6hr and 5k/10k has been POSTPONED.
The new date for the event is Saturday, MARCH 29th.
Exactly two weeks from today.
Same time.
Same location.
We'll post more details in the next couple of days.

HSP Spoke Pony Showdown 3/6 Tomorrow... maybe
The lastest from the HSP boys:
.....We just got back from riding the Spoke Pony loop. As of 11:30am this morning the course condtions are mostly tacky due to the overnight dew. Everything was ridable and looking good for racing tomorrow....
BUT,
If we get any mositure this evening...the course conditions will worsen.
Current forecasts are calling for rain late this evening and into the morning.
We will make the final race call...by 6:30am Saturday morning. Please keep checking our website.
Thank you all for understanding. We want to race just as much as you.

Done and Done!
I ran out this morning and installed it
Now all my spring changes have been made to the Karate Monkey
LD purple Surly hubs have QR axles with Hope skewers
Front Avid BB-7 brake has been dropped to a 160 rotor (did have an 8 inch)
New SRAM 8 speed chain (old one was beyond stretched)
New Surly stainless seat post clamp
I have been considering painting the frame a different color
But I decided its not worth the time, trouble or expense
Even if I am biting Rottenmac's style
Besides, I like "Skid Mark Brown"
Now that I have used up the nice sunny but windy 70 degree Sunday morning I am gonna pull on some SPD shoes and take the KM up and down the Trolley Trail a couple of times before the temps drop and the predicted rain arrives today.

23 inches and counting...the winter precipitation total to date. Rain or snow falling on average every three days and a constant freeze/thaw cycle sure doesn't make for the best racing conditions.
We are all mountain bikers/trail runners and have a great passion for the sport.
All of our promoters are not only mountain bike racers/runners, but also individuals that are active trail builders and stewards that will always try to make decisions that are environmentally sound and best for our trail systems.
We are racers and have always established the highest standards for HSP races. We want our races to be fun, competitive, and offer the best racing experience possible. If we know the conditions are going to be substandard, that is not acceptable.
Taking all of the above into consideration and walking the trails this afternoon.....Truman's Big Love Cross Country (HMBCS #1) and Truman's Big Love 5/10k is POSTPONED. Both events have tentatively been re-scheduled for Sunday, June 22ND. Same time and location.
Stay tuned....Spoke Pony Showdown 3hr/6hr and 5k/10k trail run are just over two weeks away. Here's to sunshine, warm temps and windy conditions to get us back to dirt racing.

Well that sucks. But in a way I am happy. I really didn't want my first MTB ride of the year to be a race. I have no legs and my bike is still waiting on parts to complete it for the season. Some of the parts did arrive today. Tomorrow I will switch out my axles to make my hubs QR, drop the front rotor down to 160 (as it should have been all along) and tune it up. Not sure on what the wait is gonna be for my On-One fork. But I guess I have little choice but to wait.
Looks like this means Saturday I can ride myself into the ground with out having to worry about racing on Sunday.

Not sure if I want Sunday's race to be postponed or not.
I would like to ride my 29er since I think the last time I was on it on a trail was at Homie Fall Fest in MPLS back in October.
But I also think that some time to get an off road ride or two under my belt before my first race wouldn't be a bad idea either.
So far this MTB race season is starting off strikingly similar to '07.
My first MTB ride of the year was also a race... and early season postponements killed my MTB race season. I don't' want this to happen, again.
However, I would also like to put the first race off for another reason. I have parts on order for my 29er that haven't arrived yet.
Waiting on my On-One Carbon SL fork (not sure how long that will take since its jumping the pond from the UK), my new axles to convert my Surly bolt on hubs to quick release, and I still want to lay a fresh coat of paint and some new decals on my 29er. But hell if that doesn't happen it doesn't happen.
I would just like to ride on some dirt.
Real DIRT, not frozen mud, mud, snow, or any sort of slush crap.
I guess all I do is to hurry up and wait.
I hate waiting.
